This class will be taught online and you can take part from the comfort of your own home. The RCS campus is open with a limited capacity for degree students only to ensure a safe learning environment for all.

This online short course is for people age 16+ who are interested in applying to the BA Production Arts and Design programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It is designed and led by experienced Production lecturers and aims to support your preparation for the interview process.

There is a vast array of possible ‘back-stage’ employment opportunities in theatre. These range from set and costume designer roles to workshop-based practitioner roles such as model-making, carpentry, costume making, prosthetics and scenic painting.

This 6-hour course briefly introduces all areas of design and production arts for performance via three online sessions. It focuses on practical advice and support in building a personal portfolio as well as covers interview tasks that are required when applying to our undergraduate programmes in production. Areas such as developing a concept, what to show and what to leave out, research, and creative development will be included.

By the end of the course you should have:

  • Improved your understanding of the BA Production Arts and Design programme at RCS
  • Developed an understanding of the entry requirements for a programme of study in production arts and design and how to prepare for the interview itself
  • Been offered advice on developing existing personal art portfolios in order to best represent your abilities at interview
  • Undertaken script-analysis activities which will help support your preparation for application

Although this course specifically prepares students for interview at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, it provides skills and experience transferable to other contexts.
